They say your home is your castle.
Avoid having a sewage-filled moat in your basement by protecting your home from severe summer storms and the icky flood waters that come with them.
Here are some things you can do to protect your home and avoid the grief of cleaning up a flooded basement:
- Ensure proper surface grading around your home to divert water away from your house, including extending downspouts a minimum of six feet away from the foundation.
Note: They should not be connected to the municipal sewer system. - Install a sump pump in your basement to pump excess ground water out and away from your home.
Note: It should not be pumped into the municipal sewer system. - Renovating? That's a perfect time to consider installing a mainline sewer backwater valve on the main sewer line exiting your home to protect it from sewer back up. Be sure to contact a certified plumbing professional.
