Fire Safety Mentorship program

The Regina Fire Department investigates ways to improve the long standing fire safety programming traditionally offered in the core areas of the city.

As part of our ongoing efforts to promote fire prevention, we are proud to team up with the Regina Fire Department and present the SGI CANADA Fire Safety Mentorship program.

Recently, the program has moved beyond the core and is being offered to several schools throughout the city.

Elementary school principals and staff identified the need for student mentors; older youth with leadership potential, to promote fire prevention and survival messaging within the schools. Six to 8 students from various schools were chosen and are being trained by the Regina Fire Department with the help of funding from SGI CANADA.

The fire safety mentors start with a training session at a fire hall where they tour the facility and learn fire safety to take back to their school. With the help of firefighters, the students facilitate sessions for classrooms of all ages at their own school. The mentors continue on with safety messaging throughout the year. They are positive role models to others in their schools as they offer support to kids who practice proper fire safety techniques.
